A government school in Chandigarh is making international headlines after being selected to host a delegation of American educators under one of the world’s most respected academic exchange initiatives—the Fulbright Program – Teachers for Global Classrooms.

Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 38 (West), DMC, Chandigarh, is among only seven educational institutions across India chosen through a rigorous national selection process to participate in the prestigious program. The recognition places the Chandigarh institution alongside leading schools and educational organizations such as DPS Bengaluru, Kotak Mahindra Education Foundation (Mumbai), The Scindia School (Gwalior), St. Joseph Higher Secondary School (Thiruvananthapuram), SCERT Telangana, and Government High School, Kolkata.

For Chandigarh’s education community, the selection represents more than institutional recognition—it reflects the growing national and international appreciation of the city’s government school system and its emphasis on innovation, skill-based learning, and teacher development.

A Week of Global Learning

A three-member delegation of teachers from the United States arrived at GMSSS, Sector 38 (West), DMC on July 17 and will remain at the school until July 23, participating in an intensive week-long academic exchange.

The Fulbright initiative seeks to foster collaboration between educators from different countries by encouraging the sharing of innovative classroom practices, modern pedagogical approaches, and global perspectives on education.

Throughout the visit, the American educators have been immersed in the school’s distinctive approach to skill education. They have observed hands-on learning initiatives spanning diverse disciplines, including Beauty and Wellness, Art, Kalamkari, Pichwai, Mandala Art, Sculpture, and Block Printing—programs that blend vocational education with India’s rich artistic heritage.

The delegation is also contributing directly to professional development by conducting a capacity-building workshop for 40 teachers from Government schools across Chandigarh, creating opportunities for mutual learning and the exchange of classroom experiences.

Showcasing Chandigarh’s Educational Model

The visit extended beyond the school campus as the delegation met Shri Nitish Singla, Director, School Education, Chandigarh Administration, to gain a broader understanding of the city’s educational ecosystem.

The visiting educators were also introduced to the functioning of the Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK), where presentations highlighted India’s education system and the best practices adopted by Chandigarh’s Government schools.

Particular appreciation was expressed for Chandigarh’s emphasis on skill-based education, with GMSSS, Sector 38 (West), DMC emerging as a notable example of how practical learning, creativity, and vocational skills are being integrated into mainstream school education.
