Times Higher Education announces World University Rankings for 2026.
London, October 9, 2025 — Times Higher Education has released its World University Rankings 2026. Trusted globally by students, academics, governments, and industry experts, this list includes 2,191 institutions from 115 countries and territories.
University Rankings 2026: Highlights
- Oxford has maintained the top spot for the tenth consecutive year, thanks to its strong research environment score.
- Princeton has improved its position and now shares third place, achieving its highest ranking ever.
- China is represented by five universities in the top 40, an increase from three last year, while the top universities remain consistent.
- Hong Kong has achieved a record six positions in the top 200, attributed to enhancements in teaching metrics.
- For the first time, India has the second-highest number of ranked universities, just behind the United States.

Key Highlights for India
- No Indian university made it into the global top 100. This continues a trend observed in previous years, despite some improvements among individual institutions.
- India ranks second globally in terms of the number of universities included in the rankings, trailing only the United States.
- The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore maintains its position as the top-ranked Indian university, placed in the 201–250 band globally.
- The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) follows, ranked in the 351–400 band.
- KIIT University (Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology) made a significant advancement:
- Ranked 5th nationally among 128 Indian institutions.
- Moved up to the 501–600 band globally, improving from the 601–800 band last year.
- Ranked 259th globally in the ‘Academic Excellence’ parameter.
- Other institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia, Shoolini University, and Banaras Hindu University either maintained or slightly improved their rankings within the 401–600 band.

This prestigious institution has joined notable counterparts, including Shoolini University of Solan, Lovely Professional University of Phagwara, Chitkara University of Rajpura, and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology in Patiala, to emerge as formidable contenders to effectively challenge and end the long-standing dominance of Panjab University of Chandigarh, which has historically been a major player in the region’s educational landscape.
