Election Commission of India Notification: Vice-Presidential Election Schedule

  • The Election Commission of India has issued a Notification on the Schedule for the Vice-Presidential Election in 2025.

Voting will take place on September 9, 2025, if needed.

The deadline for nominations is August 21, 2025.

New Delhi, India, August 7, 2025 — Today, the Election Commission published a notification in the Gazette of India Extraordinary announcing the schedule for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025.

(a) The deadline for submitting nominations is August 21, 2025.

(b) The scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22, 2025.

(c) The final date for withdrawing candidacies is August 25, 2025.

(d) If necessary, the polling date will be September 9, 2025.

The Commission, through separate notifications issued on July 25, 2025, has appointed Shri P.C. Mody, the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the Vice-Presidential Election of 2025. Additionally, Ms. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Shri Vijay Kumar, Director of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, have been appointed as Assistant Returning Officers.

As required under rule 3 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Returning Officer has issued a Public Notice today, August 7, 2025, stating that:

  1. Nomination papers may be submitted by a candidate or by one of their proposers or seconders. The completed documents should be delivered to the undersigned at their office in Room No. RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi. If the candidate is unavoidably absent, the papers may be submitted to the Assistant Returning Officers: Ms. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, or Shri Vijay Kumar, Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, at the same office. Nomination papers will be accepted between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on any day except public holidays, but must be submitted no later than August 21, 2025.
  2. Every nomination paper must include a certified copy of the candidate’s entry in the electoral roll for the Parliamentary constituency where the candidate is registered as an elector.
  3. Every candidate must deposit fifteen thousand rupees. This amount can be submitted in cash to the Returning Officer when the nomination paper is presented. Alternatively, candidates may deposit the amount earlier at the Reserve Bank of India or a Government Treasury. In this case, a receipt confirming this deposit must be included with the nomination paper.
  4. Forms for nomination papers can be obtained from the office, as mentioned above, at the designated time.
  5. The nomination papers, except for those rejected under sub-section (4) of section 5B of the Act, will be reviewed at the specified office in Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, on Monday, August 22, 2025, at 11 a.m.
  6. Candidates may deliver their notice of withdrawal in person, or through one of their proposers or seconders who has been authorized in writing by the candidate, to the undersigned at the location mentioned above before 3:00 p.m. on August 25, 2025.
  7. In the case of a contested election, voting will occur on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at designated polling locations as specified by the rules.

Arrangements have been made for the simultaneous publication of these Notifications and the Public Notice issued by the Returning Officer in all Official Gazettes of the States and Union Territories.

He is available between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on all working days, including Saturdays (excluding public holidays), during the period for filing Nomination Papers, which is from August 9 to August 16, 2025.
