  • The 2024 India-USA joint military exercise, Yudh Abhyas, has commenced in Rajasthan.

New Delhi, India, September 9, 2024 — The 20th edition of the India-USA Joint Military Exercise YUDH ABHYAS-2024 started today at the Foreign Training Node in Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Rajasthan. The exercise will take place from September 9 to 22, 2024. YUDH ABHYAS has been conducted annually since 2004, alternately in India and the USA.

The upcoming joint exercise will significantly expand troop numbers and the range of equipment involved. The Indian Army contingent, made up of 600 personnel, will be led by the RAJPUT Regiment, with support from personnel in other units. Similarly, the US contingent comprising around 600 personnel will be represented by the 1-24 Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division from Alaska’s US Army.

The primary objective of the joint exercise is to bolster the combined military capacity of both parties for conducting counter-terrorism operations within a sub-conventional framework, as stipulated in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise will specifically emphasize operations within a semi-desert environment.

The specific tactical drills to be rehearsed during the exercise include joint responses to terrorist actions, joint planning, and combined field training exercises designed to simulate real-world counter-terrorism missions. These drills will enhance the joint military capability of both sides.

The ‘YUDH ABHYAS’ exercise will allow both sides to share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting joint operations. It will help develop interoperability, camaraderie, and friendship between the two armies. The joint exercise will also enhance defence cooperation, strengthening bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
