Vice-President Radhakrishnan’s Inspiring Convocation Speech at Kashmir University

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan Addresses the 21st Convocation of the University of Kashmir

The University of Kashmir campus came alive in celebration as the Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, graced the 21st Convocation Ceremony in Srinagar—his first official visit to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir as the Vice-President of India. The day was one of pride, inspiration, and reflection for the graduates, faculty, and dignitaries who gathered to mark this milestone event.

Honouring a Proud Legacy

In his address, the Vice-President congratulated the graduating students and commended the University of Kashmir for its impressive academic record and for its contributions to research and innovation. Established in 1948, the university has since earned an NAAC A++ grade, ranked 34th in the NIRF (University Category), and published over 7,700 research papers since 2019. He also lauded pioneering initiatives such as the National Himalayan Ice-Core Laboratory, noting that they strengthen the institution’s global presence and reinforce its reputation as a hub for higher learning.

Women Lead the Way

A highlight of the ceremony was the outstanding performance of the university’s women scholars. The Vice-President expressed joy that the Minister for Higher Education, the Vice-Chancellor, and a majority of gold medal recipients were women—a reflection, he said, of the power of women’s empowerment in Jammu & Kashmir. “This is a clear sign of progress and transformation,” he observed, applauding their leadership across education and public service.

“Change Is the Only Constant”

Addressing the graduates, Shri Radhakrishnan reminded them that they are entering a world defined by rapid transformation. “Change is the only constant,” he said, urging young people to stay adaptable, embrace innovation, and pursue the skills needed to shape the future. He encouraged students to pursue Swadeshi innovations that advance India’s mission of Viksit Bharat 2047, emphasizing that technological innovation rooted in national priorities will drive the country’s growth in the years ahead.

A Message of Development and Unity

The Vice-President also touched upon key development projects in Jammu & Kashmir under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi—such as the expansion of Srinagar International Airport and the construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge, which will enhance connectivity and economic opportunity. He expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister, Srinagar would soon emerge as one of India’s cleanest and most vibrant cities.

Drawing on his experience as the former Governor of Jharkhand, Shri Radhakrishnan spoke about the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative, highlighting cultural exchanges that foster mutual understanding and unity. “In a democracy,” he said, “respecting others’ sentiments is as important as respecting your own.”

A Call for Responsible Citizenship

In closing, the Vice-President urged the youth to stay away from drugs and to use social media with mindfulness and integrity. “Life will test your courage and character beyond the classroom,” he said, encouraging the graduates to hold steadfast to their values as they step into the wider world.

Ending on an emotional note, he reminded everyone of the spirit of shared belonging that binds the nation together:
“Yah hum sabka Kashmir hai” — This is our Kashmir, united and inclusive.

The ceremony was attended by the Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor of the University, Shri Manoj Sinha; the Chief Minister and Pro-Chancellor, Shri Omar Abdullah; the Minister for Higher Education, Ms. Sakeena Masood Itoo; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nilofer Khan; and members of the academic community, students, and families—all united in celebrating the next generation of change-makers.
