Chandigarh, India, October 24, 2025 — The Government of India has approved 328 additional electric buses under the PM-e-Bus Service Scheme, marking a significant milestone in Chandigarh’s initiative to become a carbon-free city. With this approval, the total number of electric buses designated for the town has increased to 428.
The Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Mr. Gulab Chand Kataria, stated that this primary approval is the outcome of sustained efforts by the Chandigarh Administration and continuous engagement with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to transition the city’s bus fleet to electric mobility.
Mr. Kataria highlighted the importance of transitioning Chandigarh’s entire bus fleet to electric buses in a phased approach, aiming to make the ‘City Beautiful’ a carbon-free city in the near future. He also noted that the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, responded positively to this initiative, which seeks to promote clean transportation and reduce environmental pollution. The minister approved Chandigarh’s additional request under the relevant scheme.
Governor Kataria expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Shri Khattar for his prompt and thoughtful action. He stated that this decision will significantly enhance Chandigarh’s public transport system by improving connectivity, enhancing passenger convenience, and improving environmental sustainability. He added that the allocation of 428 e-buses marks a pivotal step toward transforming Chandigarh into a model green city with a modern and eco-friendly transport network.
The Governor expressed gratitude for the proactive cooperation from the Ministry and Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) in speeding up the issuance of Letters of Confirmation of Quantity (LOQ) and Letters of Award (LOA) for the previously approved 100 electric buses. This collaboration has enabled the timely implementation of the project.
Governor Kataria reiterated that the Chandigarh Administration is dedicated to expanding the city’s clean transportation infrastructure in line with the vision of sustainable urban development. He emphasized that these progressive initiatives will not only improve public amenities but also help create a greener, cleaner, and healthier environment.
