Chandigarh’s Vision for a World-Class Tourist Destination

The Administrator of Chandigarh participated in the Tourism Ministers’ conference for States and Union Territories held in Udaipur.

Udaipur, Rajasthan, October 15, 2025 — A two-day conference for State and Union Territories Tourism Ministers is being held in Udaipur on October 14-15. The focus of the conference is on developing tourist destinations that meet global standards. Attendance includes Tourism Ministers and senior officials from across the country. The conference aims to encourage collaboration among States and Union Territories to fulfill the Honorable Prime Minister’s vision of having each State develop at least one tourist destination that is on par with global standards, complete with world-class facilities and infrastructure.

The conference featured the notable attendance of Punjab’s Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria, alongside Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of Tourism for the Government of India.

During his address, Mr. Kataria thanked the Ministry of Tourism for hosting this important event in Udaipur and emphasized his personal connection to the State of Rajasthan.

The Administrator discussed Chandigarh’s diverse tourist attractions and its significant potential to become a world-class destination. He highlighted Chandigarh as an exemplary model of modern urban planning and architecture, stressing the Administration’s commitment to cleanliness and environmental sustainability. He pointed out that the city’s green cover has increased from 45% to 51% over the past two years, setting new benchmarks for sustainable urban development.

The Secretary of Tourism in Chandigarh, Mr. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, outlined the city’s strategy to become a world-class tourist destination through an integrated tourism circuit approach. He discussed plans to improve infrastructure and facilities at major attractions, including the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Le Corbusier Centre, and the Government Museum and Art Gallery. These initiatives will be implemented under the Performance Linked Incentive Framework of the Ministry of Tourism. Additionally, Mr. Brar proposed the creation of a Tourism Hub, featuring an Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre and a Concert Hall, with support from the Ministry.

The conference serves as a key platform to establish guidelines for sustainable and responsible tourism, develop new tourism circuits, and enhance coordination between the Centre and the States to promote India as a premier global tourism destination collectively.
