- Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria met with Prime Minister Modi and emphasized the need for all universities and colleges in the region to receive accreditation from NAAC.

New Delhi, India, September 23, 2025 — Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today. During their meeting, he informed the Prime Minister about the current situation in Punjab and Chandigarh, as well as the key developmental priorities for the region.
The meeting addressed a broad spectrum of issues, including immediate flood relief initiatives, long-term developmental strategies, security preparedness, educational reforms, socio-cultural considerations, and economic revitalization in the border regions. The comprehensive discussion outlined a strategic roadmap for the advancement of Punjab and Chandigarh.
The Governor outlined measures taken in response to the floods in Punjab, highlighting the collaboration between the state government and volunteer organizations to assist affected families and restore infrastructure. He also addressed security and development issues along the border with Pakistan.
Mr. Kataria suggested creating a “Gift City” in Chandigarh, akin to the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), to stimulate economic development in the region.
The Governor presented a comprehensive update to the Prime Minister regarding the implementation of the New Education Policy in both Punjab and Chandigarh. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the standards of higher education by ensuring that all universities and colleges achieve accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This initiative aims to enhance educational quality, promote accountability, and improve the overall experience for students in the region.
NAAC is an autonomous organization under the University Grants Commission (UGC) that assesses the performance, curriculum, teaching and learning processes, and governance of universities and colleges. Accreditation is vital for establishing and maintaining high standards in education.
