New Delhi, India, September 4, 2025 — Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan released the India Rankings 2025 today. This ranking is based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which was developed by the Ministry of Education in 2015. Present at the event were Shri Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and DoNER; Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary (Higher Education); Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE; Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of NETF, NAAC, and NBA; and Dr. Anil Kumar Nassa, Member Secretary of NBA. Vice chancellors and directors from various institutions of higher education joined them.
Mr. Pradhan stated that NEP 2020 has established a roadmap for developing our Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), which includes enhancing their accreditation processes. He noted that the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has become a reliable foundation in the effort to transform Bharat into a knowledge superpower. He emphasized the need for everyone to raise their standards within the accreditation frameworks.
The Minister expressed confidence that NIRF would develop into one of the leading accreditation frameworks, adopting more data-driven approaches, incorporating additional ranking parameters and categories, and involving more institutions in the future.
- Key Highlights of India Rankings 2025
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras has secured the 1st position in the Overall Category for the seventh consecutive year (2019 to 2025) and in the Engineering category for ten straight years (2016 to 2025).
- Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, tops the Universities Category for the tenth consecutive year (2016 to 2025) and has held the first position in the Research Institutions Category for five straight years (2021 to 2025).
- IIM Ahmedabad retains its top position in the Management subject for the sixth consecutive year (2020 to 2025), after being ranked among the top two in Management from 2016 to 2019.
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, ranks first in the Medical category for the eighth consecutive year (2018 to 2025) and is positioned 8th overall. AIIMS was ranked 6th in 2023 and 7th in 2024 in the Overall category.
- Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, has topped the Pharmacy ranking for the second consecutive year. It held the 1st position for four straight years (2019-2022) and was ranked 2nd in 2018 and 2023.
- Hindu College has secured the 1st position among Colleges for the second consecutive year, replacing Miranda House, which retained the 1st position for seven straight years (2017 to 2023). Hindu College was ranked 2nd in 2019, 2022, and 2023, and held 3rd and 4th positions in 2020 and 2018, respectively.
- IIT Roorkee has retained its 1st position in Architecture and Planning for the fifth consecutive year (2021 to 2025), previously being ranked 2nd from 2018 to 2020.
- National Law School of India University, Bengaluru maintains its 1st position in Law for the eighth consecutive year (2018 to 2025).
- Colleges in Delhi continue to dominate the rankings, with six colleges from Delhi comprising the top 10 colleges.
- Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, ranks first in Agriculture and Allied Sectors for the third consecutive year (2023 to 2025).
- Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab, and Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab have surpassed Panjab University, Chandigarh, in both Overall Rankings and University Rankings.
- Chandigarh University holds a strong position in the Overall Rankings at 32nd, significantly outperforming Panjab University, which is ranked 57th. In the University Rankings, Chandigarh University continues to excel, securing the 19th spot, while Panjab University stands at 35th.
