New Delhi, India, June 28, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the Indian astronaut who became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station, via video conference today. The Prime Minister remarked that although Shubhanshu is currently the farthest from Indian soil, he remains closest to the hearts of all Indians. He noted that Shubhanshu’s name itself holds auspicious significance, and his journey marks the beginning of a new era for the country.
Mr. Modi stated that while their conversation was between two individuals, it reflected the emotions and enthusiasm of 1.4 billion Indians. He emphasized that the voice speaking to Shubhanshu carried the collective pride and zeal of the entire nation, extending his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Shubhanshu for hoisting India’s flag in space. The Prime Minister also inquired about Shubhanshu’s well-being and whether everything was going well aboard the space station.
In response to the Prime Minister’s message, astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla expressed his gratitude for the best wishes extended on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. He conveyed that he is in good health and deeply touched by the love and blessings he has received. Shubhanshu described his time in orbit as a profound and unique experience, one that mirrors not only his journey but also the progress India is making as a nation. He noted that his 400-kilometer journey from Earth to orbit symbolizes the aspirations of countless Indians.
Reflecting on his childhood, Shubhanshu shared that he never imagined he would become an astronaut. However, under the Prime Minister’s leadership, today’s India allows dreams like his to become a reality. He called this achievement a significant milestone and expressed immense pride in representing his country in space.
Shukla informed the Prime Minister that he had brought gajar ka halwa, moong dal halwa, and aam ras (mango nectar), which his fellow astronauts had enjoyed on the space station.
Currently, the International Space Station is home to 11 astronauts from six different countries.
Prime Minister Modi extended his heartfelt wishes to Shubhanshu Shukla and all his fellow astronauts for the success of their mission. He expressed that the entire nation eagerly awaits Shubhanshu’s safe return and urged him to take care of himself. The Prime Minister encouraged Shubhanshu to continue honoring Maa Bharati and conveyed countless good wishes on behalf of 1.4 billion citizens. He concluded by expressing deep gratitude for the immense effort and dedication that enabled Shubhanshu to reach such great heights.
