The Chandigarh Engineering Department held a meeting to review its preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.

Chandigarh, India, May 20, 2025 — The Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Administration convened a meeting yesterday, presided over by Ms. Prerna Puri, IAS, the Secretary of Engineering for U.T. Chandigarh. During this critical session, the team thoroughly evaluated the city’s readiness for the impending monsoon season, which is forecasted to arrive by the end of June. The discussion included examining drainage systems, road maintenance, and emergency response plans to ensure Chandigarh can effectively cope with heavy rains and potential flooding.
The meeting was attended by C.B. Ojha, Chief Engineer of the U.T. Administration; Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation; Superintending Engineers Jigna and Dr. Rajesh Bansal from Public Health; A.K. Verma from Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL); and other key officials.
During the deliberations, the Engineering Department and the Municipal Corporation reached a consensus on initiating an immediate city-wide initiative aimed at cleaning road gullies, removing debris from berms, and desilting stormwater drains, manholes, and the Sukhna Choe, Patiala-ki-Rao, and N-Choe channels. To address potential waterlogging, pumping sets, generators, and sandbags will be pre-positioned at identified critical locations. Furthermore, road surfaces, bridges, and culverts that require repair or recarpeting will be thoroughly inspected and restored promptly to ensure safety and functionality.
The administration will ensure that all government, institutional, and residential buildings have thoroughly cleared their rooftop terraces of debris and obstacles. Additionally, existing rainwater harvesting systems will be carefully serviced to improve their functionality. The lightning arresters installed at major facilities will also be tested promptly to ensure they are effective in the event of a storm.
Dedicated teams will work tirelessly around the clock on a rotational basis, vigilantly monitoring the water levels at Sukhna Lake. They will promptly address public complaints and ensure essential services remain uninterrupted, even in challenging conditions.
The administration will focus on close coordination between the Municipal Corporation and the administrative field units. This collaborative effort will enable providing quick and practical solutions in any situation, ensuring that the community’s needs are met efficiently and with care.
Chandigarh Residents are encouraged to utilize the 24/7 emergency helplines—0172-2787200 or 0172-6135200—for assistance and guidance throughout the monsoon season.
