Chandigarh’s Push for Quality Standards and ISO Certifications

The Chief Secretary of Chandigarh Union Territory has directed the adoption of quality standards throughout the city.

Chandigarh, India, May 16, 2025— The State Level Committee on Standardization meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mr. Rajeev Verma, Chief Secretary of UT Chandigarh. The Committee’s objective is to promote the use of Indian Standards to establish a strong quality system in the Union Territory and protect the interests of consumers.

Ms. Sneh Lata, Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (North India), delivered a comprehensive presentation.

The Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Chandigarh has established a directive requiring all departments that engage with the public to pursue and obtain the ISO 37001 certification for the Anti-Bribery Management System. This initiative aims to promote transparency and integrity in public services, ensuring that ethical practices are upheld and that citizens can trust the processes of their government.

The Chief Secretary stressed the need to develop plans to implement a Service Quality Management System (SQMS) across all departments. In particular, he urged the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation and the Estate Office to establish a Record Management System to improve their record-keeping, especially about older records.

The Chief Secretary commended the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh’s proactive initiative in pursuing certification for the Piped Drinking Water Management System. If successful, Chandigarh will become the pioneering city in India to achieve this prestigious certification. This milestone will guarantee that the drinking water supplied to the city’s residents adheres to the stringent standards set for Potable Drinking Water (IS 10500). This achievement is crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of all residents, as it reflects the city’s commitment to providing safe and reliable water resources.

The Chief Secretary has directed all departments to comply with the Quality Control Orders (QCOs). The Secretary of Industries has been assigned to conduct additional awareness programs for all industries, focusing on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Furthermore, it has been instructed that the general public should be informed about the BIS Care App, which verifies the genuineness and authenticity of products, including precious metals like gold and silver.

All Administrative Secretaries of the Chandigarh Administration gathered for the meeting, among them the Home Secretary, the Finance Secretary, and the Secretary of Food & Supplies. These senior officials were joined by diverse representatives from various sectors, including local industries, consumer advocacy organizations, and prominent academic institutions — the collaborative atmosphere aimed to foster meaningful discussions and drive forward initiatives beneficial to the community.
