The National Press Club commends the federal ruling that reaffirms the rights of the press to access vital information.

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2025 — The National Press Club has expressed strong praise for the recent federal court ruling, which asserts that discrimination against journalists based on their viewpoints is unconstitutional. They described this decision as a significant and necessary step toward restoring accountability in the media landscape and safeguarding the public’s vital right to access information. This ruling reinforces the principles of free expression and helps ensure that diverse perspectives within journalism can thrive without fear of bias or retribution.
“This represents a significant achievement for press freedom and the public’s entitlement to receive independent reporting regarding the highest levels of government,” remarked Mike Balsamo, President of the National Press Club. “This ruling affirms that the government cannot penalize a news organization for its independent editorial decisions.”
In his decision, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden wrote: “If the Government opens its doors to some journalists … it cannot then shut those doors to other journalists because of their viewpoints. The Constitution requires no less.”
Although the court’s injunction is currently stayed until April 13, the ruling clearly states that excluding journalists based on their viewpoints violates fundamental constitutional protections.
“At a time when transparency is more important than ever, today’s decision serves as a reminder that the First Amendment continues to be a cornerstone of our democracy,” Balsamo said. “This is not just a victory for one newsroom; it is a win for every journalist and every American who relies on a free press.”
Established in 1908, the National Press Club serves as the foremost professional organization for journalists around the globe. The organization boasts a membership of over 2,500 individuals, representing nearly every significant journalism entity. The Club, together with its Press Freedom Center, serves as a prominent advocate for matters concerning press freedom both within the United States and worldwide.
