UGC Alerts: How to Identify and Avoid Fraudulent Universities

India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a public notice to raise general awareness about fake universities.

New Delhi, March 23, 2025 — The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has notified students, parents, and the public that only universities or institutions established under a State Act, Central Act, Provincial Act, or those authorized to confer degrees per the UGC Act of 1956 can award degrees.

The UGC has noted that several institutions are issuing degrees that violate the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by these universities and institutions will not be recognized or considered valid for higher education or employment purposes.

UGC has advised all individuals to verify information on the UGC website regarding recognized universities and institutions and information about fraudulent institutions before enrolling in any higher education program.

UGC has advised the public that if any university or institution offers academic programs violating the UGC Act, they should email UGC to report it so that appropriate action may be taken against that institution.
