NASA Invites Media to Attend Administrator’s Flight on Electra Hybrid-Electric Aircraft

WASHINGTON, December 5, 2024 — NASA Administrator Bill Nelson will be flying in Electra’s EL2 Goldfinch experimental prototype aircraft on Sunday, December 8. NASA has invited members of the Media to meet with Nelson and Electra leaders just before the flight at 11:45 a.m. EST. The event will take place at Manassas Regional Airport in Manassas, Virginia.
Electra has designed an experimental aircraft to reduce emissions and noise while connecting regional air travel to underserved communities.
The media can view and film the flight, showcasing ultra-short takeoffs and landings requiring as little as 150 feet of ground roll. Additionally, the flight will feature a battery-only landing.
NASA’s aeronautics research focuses on developing new generations of sustainable aviation technologies to create better options for U.S. passengers and freight. The agency supports research to provide industry players, such as Electra and others, with data to inform the design of innovative, more environmentally friendly aircraft with lower operating costs. NASA’s investments include projects that explore electrified aircraft technologies and initiatives that have refined the concept of electric short takeoff and landing (eSTOL).
NASA works with private-sector aviation providers to support its sustainable solutions for the American public. In November, NASA selected Electra as one of five Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 awards recipients. Electra will conduct design studies and explore technologies for next-generation sustainable commercial aircraft, helping NASA identify and select promising concepts for further investigation.
