Chandigarh Hosts Premier Event for New Criminal Laws

Prime Minister Modi of India will dedicate the successful implementation of three new criminal laws to the nation in Chandigarh.

The program’s theme is “A Secure Society for a Developed India—Transitioning from Punishment to Justice.”

New Delhi, December 02, 2024 — The Prime Minister’s Office has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially dedicate the successful implementation of three transformative criminal laws to the nation on December 3, 2024, at noon in Chandigarh. The laws in question are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

The formulation of these laws was guided by the Prime Minister’s vision of abolishing colonial-era legislation that has remained in effect since India’s independence, thereby seeking to reform the judicial system with an emphasis on justice rather than punishment. In alignment with this objective, the event theme is “Secure Society, Developed India: From Punishment to Justice.”

Implemented nationwide on July 1, 2024, these new criminal laws are designed to render India’s legal system more transparent, efficient, and responsive to the demands of modern society. These significant reforms signify a fundamental restructuring of India’s criminal justice system, introducing innovative frameworks to confront contemporary challenges such as cybercrime and organized crime and pursue justice for victims of various offenses.

The program will also underscore the practical application of these laws, illustrating their transformative impact on the criminal justice landscape. A live demonstration simulating a crime scene investigation will showcase the operationalization of the new legal frameworks.
