Chandigarh, India, November 30, 2024 — Panjab University in Chandigarh hosted the Comparative Education Society of India (CESI)’s Annual Conference 2024. The conference attracted approximately 250 participants, including scholars, educators, senior professors, and policymakers nationwide.

Prof. Edward Vickers, Professor of Comparative Education and the UNESCO Chair on Education for Peace, Social Justice, and Global Citizenship at Kyushu University in Japan, presented a thought-provoking keynote address at the conference’s inaugural session. His presentation adeptly laid the thematic framework for the event, establishing a reflective and engaging atmosphere for the subsequent discussions.

The Comparative Education Society of India (CESI) facilitates discussions concerning the interplay between education, the state, the market, and civil society. The theme for the 14th Annual Conference in 2024 was “State, Market, and Civil Society: Rethinking Education for Sustainable Futures.” This theme inspired scholars to contribute insights that may lead to innovative policy pathways promoting a socially sustainable future.

CESI invited scholars to conduct critical examinations of the roles performed by the state, market, and civil society within the context of contemporary education. Key inquiries included:

  • How do these institutions interact, and what effects do they exert on educational access, equity, and practices?
  • How is the role of education being redefined in response to these dynamics?
  • What implications do these transformations hold for envisioning a sustainable future for our societies?
