The National Press Club in Washington has issued a statement concerning the safety of journalists covering the U.S. Elections.
The 2024 United States presidential election is designated as the 60th presidential election and is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

WASHINGTON, DC, October 28, 2024 — The following is a statement from Emily Wilkins, the President of the National Press Club, Washington, DC, underscoring the critical importance of journalists in covering the upcoming November elections. Their diligent work is paramount in fostering an informed electorate.
- “As voters cast their ballots in contentious elections nationwide, we want to remind everyone involved to respect journalists’ vital role in this crucial moment of the democratic process.
- “Journalists serve as America’s eyes and ears at campaign events, polling places, protests, and government buildings. They should be free to perform their responsibilities without undue restrictions, particularly regarding legally permissible photography.
- “We are increasingly alarmed by the pervasive harassment faced by journalists online, mainly targeting women and individuals of color. Reporters must be able to pursue their work in writing and broadcasting without the threat of political retribution. It is imperative that all parties unequivocally condemn any efforts to silence journalistic endeavors through intimidation.
- “As journalists, our primary responsibility is to pursue and convey the truth. Engaging in actions that target the umpire should not serve to advance the political agendas of either party.
- “We respectfully urge all stakeholders involved in the electoral process to acknowledge the stipulations set forth by federal and state law concerning the ability of journalists to cover both the voting and tabulation processes comprehensively. The press must be allowed to fulfill its role in providing the public with accurate and timely information regarding this fundamental aspect of American democracy.”
