- India’s Vice President presided over the UNESCO-coordinated International Literacy Day 2024 Celebration in New Delhi.
New Delhi, September 9, 2024 — The Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, called upon everyone to commit to helping at least one person become literate. According to him, when we empower someone with literacy, we free them, help them discover their potential, instill a sense of dignity, reduce dependence, and foster independence and interdependence. Literacy enables individuals to help themselves and is a crucial form of support.
While addressing the International Literacy Day celebrations as the Chief Guest at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today, the Vice-President emphasized the immeasurable joy and happiness of educating a person, regardless of gender or age. He noted that the positive impact of such actions will be immense and contribute significantly to human resource development.
He called for promoting literacy and emphasized the importance of 100% literacy through commitment and passion. He stressed the value of education and expressed confidence in India’s potential to reclaim its status as a center of learning.
The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNESCO, celebrated International Literacy Day 2024. This year’s theme was “Promoting Literacy through Multilingualism,” which highlighted the critical role of linguistic diversity in improving literacy levels across India’s diverse communities.
Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Education, Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), and other dignitaries were also present.
In his inaugural address, Shri Jayant Chaudhary emphasized the importance of literacy in improving health, empowering women, and boosting GDP. He stated that literacy is a developmental goal and the foundation of a developed India.
Chaudhary highlighted that efforts to achieve universal literacy are part of a global mission. He mentioned the collaboration with UNESCO to ensure that the work aligns with international standards and goals for giving every individual the right to education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. He stressed that literacy is a national priority and a global imperative with far-reaching implications for the future.
International Literacy Day is annually commemorated on September 8 globally to raise awareness of literacy as an inherent human right and a matter of dignity. The principal aim is to advance literacy and foster a more literate and sustainable society. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) coordinates this observance at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
