Chandigarh, India, Aug. 22, 2024 — Over 350 films, including 12 international entries, will be screened at the Chandigarh University International Film Festival 2024 (CUIFF’24), which kicked off on Thursday with a grand opening ceremony at the Chandigarh University campus in Gharuan.
Hosted by Chandigarh University’s Department of Animation in collaboration with Vancouver Film School, Canada’s premier entertainment arts institution, the two-day festival will showcase over 350 films. The lineup includes 100 short films, 25 experimental films, 50 documentaries, 50 2D and 3D animation films, 25 VFX (visual effects), and 80 showreels.
The opening ceremony of CUIFF’24 was attended by renowned art director BN Vichar, known for his work in the gaming industry, as the chief guest. Other dignitaries who participated in the inauguration ceremony included Lalita Deopa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prismart Productions, and screenwriter Angelene Kaur.
During a ‘Symbiosis of Script, Art, and Production in Film and Animation’ session, BN Vichar emphasized the importance of collaboration between screenwriting, art direction, and production leadership in creating cohesive narratives in the Film and Animation industries. He pointed out that art directors must make illusions believable, and aspiring individuals should continually hone their skills despite the availability of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the job. Vichar noted, “Software may come and go, but the fundamental art remains. An artist should always be open to learning from others. Everyone must undergo the learning process to produce original work. While AI reduces manual work and enhances storytelling, it’s also challenging us to surpass boundaries and create something wonderful.”
Lalita Deopa, who runs two animation studios, shared her perspective on using AI in animation. She mentioned a fear in the market that AI will take away many jobs, but it’s not true. She said that creating content for kids through animation involves incorporating social messages, which requires knowledge of all sectors.
Screenwriter Angelene Kaur stated that while AI can serve as an assistant, it cannot create new characters like human writers can. She advised students to seize opportunities that can help them enhance their writing skills. “Writers must evoke emotions and thoughts in their audience. It’s crucial to establish a connection and relate to the characters in the story to achieve this,” she emphasized.
On day 2 of the festival, Rohit Tiwari, known for his dynamic roles in Mirzapur and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster, Ashish Kulkarni, Chairman of FICCI for the AVGC Forum, and Sanjay Khimesara, President of Asifa India, will make notable appearances.
