IOC President Thomas Bach Expresses Gratitude to France and Paris 2024

  • IOC expresses gratitude to France and Paris 2024 for the Olympic Games of a New Era.

Paris, August 13, 2024 — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) extended its gratitude to all those in France who played an essential role in delivering the spectacular Olympic Games in Paris 2024. At an emotional event held at the headquarters of the Organising Committee the morning after the Closing Ceremony, IOC President Thomas Bach, IOC Coordination Commission Paris 2024 Chair Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, and the IOC leadership honored government officials, Organising Committee executives, sports movement representatives, security forces, host regions, and volunteers.

At the thank-you event, President Bach said: “It will take some time for all of us to digest this wealth of emotions, experiences, hospitality, and smiles that we have enjoyed during these past two weeks.”

“Every night, I tried to recap what I had gone through during the day, and I always thought the next day couldn’t be as good. However, each day turned out to be even better, and I owe it all to our French friends,” said Thomas Bach, IOC President.

He was impressed and grateful for the alignment of the different levels of government behind the Games. He thanked everyone for their support and commitment, without which they wouldn’t be where they are today.

Finally, the IOC president expressed gratitude to his fellow Olympic champion, Tony Estanguet, President of the Organizing Committee, and his staff.

The following prominent individuals have been honored with Olympic Orders, the highest distinction bestowed by the IOC, for their exceptional contributions to the development of sport and the Olympic Movement.

The President of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, David Lappartient, was awarded the IOC President’s Trophy, titled “Sky is the Limit,” in recognition of their contribution to the success of the Games. The French team won a record number of 64 medals.

At the event, the IOC presented commemorative pins to representatives of the local security forces and the Organizing Committee team members. Additionally, a special tribute honored the 45,000 volunteers whose invaluable contributions were instrumental in the successful execution of the Games.

The IOC President thanked Paris 2024 Coordination Commission Chair Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant for his tireless work and presented him with a set of Paris 2024 medals.
