- The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) holds its 23rd Meeting.
Chandigarh, India, August 8, 2024 — Shri Rajeev Verma, Adviser to the Administrator, UT (Union Territory) Chandigarh, presided over the 23rd meeting of the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC).
Notable attendees included Smt. Anindita Mitra, Secretary Urban Planning-cum-Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Shri Vinay Partap Singh, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Estate Officer, Shri Ajay Chagti, Secretary Local Government, Smt. Hargunjit Kaur, Finance Secretary, Shri Hari Kallikat, Secretary of Culture, Chief Engineer UT Chandigarh, Chief Architect UT Chandigarh, and Engineers from the Archaeological Survey of India. Mr. Rajnish Wattas, Mr. Mac Sarin, Mr. IC Syal, and Mr. Dilmeet Grewal represented the technical experts.
The Chief Architect provided the Chairman with an overview of the CHCC’s inception, structure, and jurisdiction, followed by presentations on various projects. The session encompassed discussions on Capitol Complex administration and assessments of multiple projects, including the Martyrs Memorial.
In September 2023, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO temporarily halted three projects initiated by the Chandigarh administration due to their detrimental impact on the universal value of the Capitol Complex, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Subsequently, the UNESCO Committee reevaluated its decision and asked the Chandigarh Administration to furnish a revised proposal.
The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) has approved several proposals in this meeting. These include the ‘Street for People’ project in Sector 15 under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs scheme, the Habitat Centre and a Business Centre in Sector 17, and the master plan for the south campus of Panjab University.
Upon concluding the meeting, the Chairman issued directives for the rigorous adherence to the Government of India’s guidelines and the effective implementation of project management principles during project execution.
