IOC’s Consumer-Friendly Anti-Counterfeiting Measures for Paris 2024 Olympic Games

  • IOC puts robust anti−counterfeiting efforts in place to protect consumers and maintain athlete support during Paris 2024.

Paris, July 30, 2024 — With support from relevant authorities and key stakeholders, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Paris 2024 Organising Committee are taking decisive action to combat intellectual property (IP) infringements, including counterfeit Olympic-branded merchandise. These efforts are crucial to protecting consumers and ensuring that revenues from official merchandise sales can continue to support the development of sports and athletes worldwide and maintain the integrity of the Olympic brand.

Counterfeit apparel and products featuring official Games mascots are commonly identified. These items undermine official merchandise and commercial rights and pose safety risks due to substandard materials and manufacturing processes.

The IOC has a thorough anti-counterfeiting program that utilizes advanced authentication and traceability technology, making it simple for buyers to verify the authenticity of Olympic and Paralympic branded merchandise. These measures are consumer-friendly and guarantee that every purchase supports athletes and maintains the high standards of the Olympic Movement.

“Our goal is to assist consumers in ensuring they have access to high-quality, authorized merchandise and are protected. Importantly, our revenue generated from the sales of officially licensed products supports our efforts to give back 90 percent of our revenues to athletes and sports development worldwide through our solidarity funding model. It totals USD 4.2 million daily. This contribution is particularly significant in regions that rely solely on IOC’s solidarity funding,” said Anne-Sophie Voumard, Managing Director of IOC Television and Marketing Services.
