New Delhi, India, July 21, 2024 — Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly inaugurated the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The World Heritage Committee convenes annually to oversee all matters related to World Heritage sites and make critical decisions about which sites should be inscribed on the esteemed World Heritage list. It marks a significant moment as India is responsible for hosting the World Heritage Committee Meeting for the first time. Furthermore, the Prime Minister also took the time to explore the various exhibitions on display, showcasing India’s rich heritage and culture.

The Prime Minister warmly welcomed all the dignitaries and guests from around the world, with a special mention of Ms. Audrey Azoulay, the Director General of UNESCO. Additionally, he expressed confidence that the World Heritage Committee meeting would set new records in history, similar to other global events hosted in India.
The Prime Minister applauded the World Heritage Committee and said that hosting this program is a matter of pride for India.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s rich heritage and ancient history, stating that India’s past is reflected in every moment of the present. He emphasized that New Delhi, as the capital, is a hub of thousands of years of heritage, with historical significance at every turn. Mr. Modi referred to the 2000-year-old rust-resistant Iron Pillar as an example of India’s advanced metallurgical skills. He further mentioned that India’s heritage encompasses history and science, citing the 8th-century Kedarnath and the Brihadeeswara temples as remarkable examples of engineering and architecture.
At the end of the speech, the Prime Minister urged all foreign guests and dignitaries to explore India and informed them about a tour series for iconic heritage sites for their convenience. He expressed confidence that their experiences in India would make for a memorable trip.
The Union Minister for External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, and the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, were present, along with the Director General of UNESCO, Ms Audrey Azoulay, and the Chairperson of the World Heritage Committee.
