UGC Advisories: Prohibiting Unhealthy Food Sales in HEI Canteens

The UGC has recommended prohibiting the sale of unhealthy foods and promoting healthy food options in canteens of higher education institutions (HEI).

New Delhi, India, July 16, 2024 — The University Grants Commission (UGC), India, issued advisories regarding prohibiting the sale of unhealthy foods and promoting healthy food options in higher education institution (HEI) canteens. The UGC has once again urged HEIs to enforce the ban on the sale of unhealthy foods and to promote healthier food choices to effectively combat the ongoing epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by reducing the consumption of unhealthy ultra-processed HFSS (High in saturated Fat, Salt, and Sugar) foods.
