Deakin University proudly welcomes its inaugural batch of students to the GIFT City Campus in Gujarat, India. (GIFT City is short for Gujarat International Finance Tec-City).
GANDHINAGAR, India, July 10, 2024 — Deakin University has achieved a significant milestone by welcoming its first group of students to the GIFT City Campus in Gujarat, India. Deakin University is ranked among the top 200 universities worldwide and is the first international university to establish a teaching campus in India. The first cohort of students has started classes in the Master of Cyber Security (Professional) and Master of Business Analytics programs, marking the beginning of a new era.
Deakin’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Iain Martin, was delighted to see the students arrive on campus.
“Today, we fulfill our promise to India as our GIFT City Campus comes to life with students. This ambitious project, conceived less than two years ago, has resulted in a fully operational Deakin teaching campus, a world first,” he said.
“Deakin’s commitment has always been ‘in India, with India, for India.’ It is our proudest moment in the Deakin-India story, marking a historic milestone in our 30-year relationship.”

The GIFT City Campus will follow global standards for learning and innovation. It will provide education based on the Australian system, tailored to meet the needs of the Indian industry and workforce.

Bhavika Khotani, a Master of Business Analytics student, is the recipient of the 2024 Deakin University and GIFT City Scholarship. This scholarship alleviates financial stress and provides essential knowledge and networking opportunities, setting the stage for her future success.
Upon graduation, these students will join Deakin’s alum network in India, the university’s largest international cohort, which includes over 20,000 graduates worldwide.
Akshita Karlapati, a pioneering student, has moved significantly more than 1400 kilometers to pursue studies in Business Analytics at Deakin’s GIFT City Campus. She expresses, “Being part of history as one of the first students at GIFT City and earning an internationally recognized degree in India presents a unique opportunity. The education and connections I acquire at Deakin GIFT City will undoubtedly open doors globally, facilitating my ambitions of becoming a highly successful Business Analyst.”
