New Delhi, India, July 02, 2024 — Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation of India, Mr. Amit Shah, announced three new criminal laws at a press conference in New Delhi. These laws are designed to deliver justice to victims.
The development of these laws involved extensive discussions with various stakeholders over four years. This inclusive approach marks the most extended consultation on law in Independent India, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered. The main aim of these new laws is to address crimes against women and children by introducing a dedicated chapter to tackle these issues. Once enacted, these laws will modernize the country’s justice system and align it with the most advanced criminal justice systems in the world.
The laws have been updated to ensure they remain relevant. Problematic elements have been carefully removed, and the emphasis is on ensuring justice rather than solely focusing on punishment, with a focus on swift trials and protecting victims’ rights. This meticulous review process should reassure the public of the laws’ effectiveness and fairness.
A vital feature of these new laws is establishing a deadline for completing all legal procedures. This aims to end the long waits for justice. It’s important to note that the Supreme Court can seek justice within three years of filing a complaint.
Furthermore, the laws mandate forensic investigation for offenses punishable by seven years or more to expedite justice delivery and increase the conviction rate to 90%. Additionally, over 23,000 master trainers have already been trained, surpassing the initial target of 12,000 trainers. These coaches would train approximately 22.5 lakh police officers.
