New York Times, Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio Win National Press Club Awards

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio have won National Press Club journalism contest awards.

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2024 — The President of the National Press Club, Emily Wilkins, announced today the recipients of the esteemed National Press Club Journalism Awards. News organizations throughout the United States, ranging from local newspapers to major international media, were recognized for their impactful reporting on significant events of the year. Their work offered insight and comic relief and demonstrated the power of investigative journalism in effecting change.

The New York Times staff received four awards, including the Joan M. Friedenberg Online Journalism Award for their detailed piece “Inside the Deadly Maui Inferno, Hour by Hour.” Photographer Samar Abu Elouf was honored for her sensitive images of the war in Gaza and its impact on children. She captured this while enduring personal loss, including the destruction of her home, illness, and the death of multiple family members. Journalist Nicholas Fandos won the Sandy Hume Award for Excellence in Political Journalism for his consistent and revealing coverage of national political stories. Additionally, Emily Steele, Sydney Ember, and Mike Baker received the Michael A. Dornheim Award for their investigative piece, “Flight Risks,” which provided an insider look at the issues facing air traffic controllers.

Seth Brown of The Berkshire Eagle won the club’s Angele Gingras Humor Award for his funny columns on everyday topics. In one column, he staged a “March Madness” competition for life’s annoyances, such as TikTok videos, misaligned can openers, and “People Who Come in Five Minutes Before Closing.”

The awards dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, at the National Press Club. It will commence at 6 p.m. with a reception in the Holeman Lounge, followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m. in the ballroom.

The event will also honor Alsu Kurmasheva with the 2024 President’s Award, which is given at the discretion of the President of the National Press Club.
