QS World University Rankings 2025: Top Performers and Trends Revealed

LONDON, June 4, 2024 — QS Quacquarelli Symonds has released the 21st edition of the QS World University Rankings, the only ranking system to evaluate employability and sustainability performance. These rankings are determined through a comprehensive methodology that takes into account academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, international faculty and student ratios, and citations per faculty. MIT has maintained its position at the top of the table for the thirteenth consecutive year; however, two-thirds of the ranked universities in the United States have dropped in the past year. Imperial College London has risen four places to claim the second spot, while the University of Oxford and Harvard University remain third and fourth, respectively. The University of Cambridge completes the top five. Caltech is the only institution to break into the top 10.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The UK is home to three of the world’s top five, but over half of its universities have dropped.
  • The University of Toronto receives the world’s leading score for Sustainability, a key indicator in the QS World University Rankings that measures a university’s commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. UBC (4th) and Western University (10th) also rank high for this indicator. However, the sector records an indifferent year overall, indicating the need for more concerted efforts in sustainability across the board.
  • Eight of Australia’s highest-ranked universities have improved their positions this year, and three Australian institutions are among the global top 20.
  • Four of China’s five top 100 universities have risen. Peking University (14th) is national #1, rising three spots.
  • India has shown remarkable progress: 91% of its 46 ranked universities have climbed, remained stable, or are new entrants.
  • Indonesia, Pakistan, and Türkiye record noteworthy improvements.
  • Pakistan’s Punjab University Lahore makes a high jump.
  • Latin America has four top-100 universities: Universidad de Buenos Aires, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and Universidade de Sao Paulo.
  • Saudi Arabia’s KFUPM (101st) is the highest-ranked Arab institution. Meanwhile, Africa’s leader is the University of Cape Town (171st).
