University of Birmingham Expands Influence in India with Vital Academic Partnerships

NEW DELHI, June 3, 2024 — Lord Karan Bilimoria, the Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, has led the largest-ever delegation of academics from the University to India.

Lord Bilimoria met with crucial university partners during the visit, including the Green R&D Centre (HPGRDC) of Hindustan Petroleum Company Limited (HPCL) in Bengaluru. This visit was part of the partnership between the University of Birmingham and HPCL, which aims to develop a cutting-edge hydrogen dispensing system for India’s transport sector.

The Chancellor also engaged with leaders at NITI Aayog, the Government of India’s public policy think tank, to discuss the University’s involvement in India. Additionally, Lord Bilimoria addressed students at Atlas Skilltech University in Mumbai, sharing entrepreneurship insights based on his business experience.

This visit follows the recent launch of a new Joint Master’s program in Sustainable Energy Systems between the University of Birmingham and IIT Madras. This program builds on the success of the partners’ first Joint Master’s program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, launched last year.

Lord Bilimoria stated, “I led the University of Birmingham delegation to India in May, visiting Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune, accompanied by 20 academics and the provost of the University of Birmingham Dubai. Meeting with our fundamental research and education partners and engaging with potential students was a great opportunity.”

Academics from the University also met with offer holders in Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune to provide information about their future studies and career opportunities.

The University of Birmingham, ranked among the top 100 institutions globally, attracts researchers, teachers, and over 8,000 international students from more than 150 countries.

The University established its India Institute in January 2018, aiming to build vital education and research partnerships in India. As a part of this commitment, the University is expanding its permanent office in Delhi to further its work in India.

The University of Birmingham has successful research and education partnerships in Delhi, Chennai, Pune, and Mumbai, including collaborations with renowned institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Public Health Foundation of India, Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

The institution is also collaborating on government projects related to plastic pollution in the River Ganga and a railway research program with the Indian Railways.
